If you ever find yourself in Cobh, County Cork, you might notice a famous statue of Annie Moore. Annie holds the unique honor of being the first person processed through Ellis Island in New York after she set sail from Cobh in 1892. Cobh itself boasts the second-largest natural harbor in the world, making it once a key departure point for those heading to America. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and if you have the time, you can take a boat out to visit Spike Island, which has an old prison you can explore.
Before departing Dublin, a short walking tour of St. Stephen’s Green gives a great insight into the history of the city. This beautiful park is filled with monuments that tell the story of Dublin’s history. One such monument is a statue of Robert Emmet, a passionate Irish patriot who was executed for his role in the 1803 rebellion. His execution took place on September 20th, 1803, just across from St. Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street, after he was found guilty of high treason. The memorial faces the house where he was born—a poignant reminder of his legacy.
From Dublin, travel by luxurious private limousine to Kilkenny, often called the Marble City because of the unique limestone used to construct its fine buildings. There, you can tour the stunning Kilkenny Castle, once home to the Butler family, the Earls of Ormond. The Butlers were deeply involved in the wine trade, even serving wine to the Kings of England and eventually monopolizing the trade in Ireland. The castle grounds are just as impressive, with the Dowager’s House, gardens, and stables showcasing some of the finest craftsmanship in Ireland. You’ll find a collective of artisans in the courtyard, offering a glimpse into traditional Irish craft.
You can pack a lot into just one day in Ireland, and I can’t wait to guide clients through the beautiful landscapes of West Cork and the Ring of Kerry!
Cobh itself is worth more than just a quick visit. You could easily spend a whole day there. The views alone are spectacular with colours terrace houses clinging to the cliffs as you drive into town. Spike Island, which is situated in the harbor, has a fascinating history. The prison there once held American prisoners during the Revolutionary War and later housed Irish Republicans during the War of Independence. For a deeper dive into history, check out the Titanic Experience. This fantastic interpretive center tells the story of the passengers aboard the ill-fated liner. When you enter, you’re given the name of a real-life passenger, and you won’t find out their fate until the end of the exhibition.
The spirit of welcoming immigrants is captured in the words of Emma Lazarus in her famous sonnet,
“The New Colossus,” written to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty’s base:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
