Some fun facts about the pubs of Ireland
●During the Famine, there were over 800 morges houses which became licensed promises.
●The oldest pub in Ireland is Sean’s Bar in Athlone, dates to 900AD, possibly the oldest in the world.
●In the 1860’s, licensed premises were under treat from the Tremperce Movement and strict Victorian values
●Groceries began to sell booze behind a screen and it became a more discreet place to have a drink, plus you could get your shopping too. The two groups, after about 20 years came together and 1870’s when both began to sell Groceries.
Anyone for a cup of tea?
In particular Tea, tea was hugely popular in Ireland, much more so that coffee. The Snug was where women come discreetly to buy loose tea. While there they would often had a few bevvies while waiting for the Groceries to measure their order. People had locals, this was where they could get Groceries and farm stuffs on the slate or credit. Pubs organised passage to America including tickets and a letter of introduction, even digs or accommodation when you got there. The full circle of life was catered for as they often doubled as undertakers
James Joyce conjured up an interesting conundrum, to walk through Dublin without passing a pub!
